double duty- the versatiliy of a piece of furniture can be determine by considering if it can serve double duty. for example; a desk that could in another house serve as a table (see picture below), a bench that could double as a coffee table (see picture above). this is important when you find yourself in a new house with an entry way that is too small for that bench you were using in your old place, but it could now work as a coffee table in your new living room. always rethink the way you can use furniture
size- choose furniture that will fit comfortable in most spaces, don't go for oversized furniture. for example, big sectionals are not a good option when you have to downsize due to smaller housing in Fort X
instead opt for a smaller couch and additional seating that could be easy reconfigured as needed.
another guideline that we could add is durability- with so many moves in the military life sometimes is hard to keep furniture from getting damage. there's nothing worst than expending lots of money in a piece of furniture you love and have the movers damage it, specially when it's a one of a kind piece. however, a good sturdy piece of furniture has higher probability to survive all the moves. I recommend to splurge on the major basic pieces like sofa and dinning table.
these tips will also apply to all the renters out there
are there any other guidelines not included here that you consider when choosing your furniture?
