Home Decorating Ideas and Tips for Military Life: Versatile Furniture

military life can be a fast paced and unpredictable one. you never really know where your next assignment will be or how your next house will look like. what you do know is that almost definitely you will be packing up your stuff and moving every three years or so. this fact can highly discourage your desire of creating a beautiful home.  I personally love the opportunity of creating and decorating new spaces so often, but it can become costly when you have to adjust your decor and furniture every time you move to fit the new space. In my young military life I have discovered tips and tricks to overcome the challenges of decorating a military home and I will be sharing them with you in this series. let's start with what I believe is the most important tip when choosing furniture for your military home; pick versatile furniture. here are a few guidelines to consider when choosing your furniture.

double dutythe versatiliy of a piece of furniture can be determine by considering if it can serve double duty. for example; a desk that could in another house serve as a table (see picture below), a bench that could double as a coffee table (see picture above).  this is important when you find yourself in a new house with an entry way that is too small for that bench you were using in your old place, but it could now work as a coffee table in your new living room. always rethink the way you can use furniture
size- choose furniture that will fit comfortable in most spaces, don't go for oversized furniture. for example, big sectionals are not a good option when you have to downsize due to smaller housing in Fort X
instead opt for a smaller couch and additional seating that could be easy reconfigured as needed.

color and style- when selecting furniture it is good to go with a neutral color or follow a color scheme  or style through out the house, that way whenever you have to recruit that side table that used to be in the living room as a nightstand it would fit right in with the rest of your bedroom decor.
another guideline that we could add is durability- with so many moves in the military life sometimes is hard to keep furniture from getting damage. there's nothing worst than expending lots of money in a piece of furniture you love and have the movers damage it, specially when it's a one of a kind piece. however, a good sturdy piece of furniture has higher probability to survive all the moves. I recommend to splurge on the major basic pieces like sofa and dinning table.

these tips will also apply to all the renters out there
are there any other guidelines not included here that you consider when choosing your furniture?
