Eco-friendly decorating ideas: Window Treatments

Another way to incorporate eco-friendly décor in your home is by using appropriate window coverings. The right window coverings can help you save energy, make your home healthier and help the environment in the process. Here are some things to consider when looking for eco-friendly window treatments and tips to help you save energy.

  • Look for Green Guard or Oeko-Tex 100 certifications
  • Choose energy efficient shades
  • Opt for eco friendly materials- stay away materials like polyester, acrylic, or vinyl. Choose materials like organic fabrics, hemp, bamboo or FSC certified wood.
  • On hot days close covering of windows facing to the east, west and south to keep the sun out
  • Select window treatments with light-colored backing to help reflect the sun’s heat back outside.
  • In cold weather choose insulated window coverings to keep heat inside and cut down on drafts.
  • Choose honeycomb shades, their multiple layers of accordion pleated material traps air between the layers and keep your home warmer.
  • Pick products that are easy to keep dust-free like Plantation-style shutters with wide louvered slats.
  • Decide on materials that can be laundered at home instead of having to be dry-cleaned.
